Guidelines to help European olive oil processors reduce their waste are being developed by an EU-funded project called the Integrated Approach to Sustainable Olive Oil and Table Olive Product (NASOOP). The 12,000 olive producers in the EU, many of whom are small or medium sized companies, are struggling to cope with increasing costs related to disposing of 10 million tons of olive waste yearly.
