Question:

Are foods cooked with olive oil hard to digest? I do a lot of frying with 1 tablespoon of olive oil. I have an acid reflux condition that flares up often and did not know if it was from the olive oil or not.

Answer:

Olive oil is very digestible but any fat will tend to relax the valve at the bottom of the esophagus, leading to worse heartburn. Fat also delays emptying of the stomach, which can worsen heartburn. Steaming foods or sautéing with a spray of olive oil would be better than deep frying.
