The Andalusian town of Baena hosts its annual Olive and Olive Oil Festival (Las Jornadas del Olivar y el Aceite). This three-day event celebrates the end of the olive harvest, when millions of kilos of olives are picked and processed. A pretty, historic white village, Baena is a 90-minute drive from Malaga. The oil from this region is considered some of the best in Europe and has been awarded the prestigious Denominación de Origen. Throughout the weekend, the town hosts a wine and food market, tastings and cooking demonstrations. The annual olive and olive oil festival climaxes with a tapas crawl through the town’s cafés where chefs compete to serve the most creative olive-based plates. Spain accounts for 45 per cent of the world's olive oil production.
